He settled with family in New York, worked as a barber, then moved to Seattle to start a Saloon called the Poodle Dog which he renamed the Dairy Restaurant. The restaurant was located at 208 Washington Street in Seattle's Pioneer Square. They served food, liquor and advertised Rooms For Ladies - a common euphemism for prostitution. He later married and tried to return to Germany - he was denied citizenship and banished from Germany for evading military service -- like Grandpa Like Son. In 1918, while out on a walk with his son he suddenly fell extremely sick and was rushed to bed. He was dead the next day of the Spanish Flu.
